There’s no denying that getting fined in the UAE can be irritating. After a peaceful day, you receive a text message from the Authorities informing you to pay a fine in the hundreds or thousands of dirhams. The good news is you usually have more options than you think. There are a number of legal methods available to you to reduce or remove the fine. These include payment incentives, special promotions, reduction campaigns, and the right to formally contest the fine.
At Arabsky24, we receive questions on a daily basis regarding the reduction or removal of fines in the UAE, so we decided to create this guide. As you would expect, this guide outlines the legal ways to reduce or remove fines in the UAE in 2026. We provide you the real methods and processes set up by the UAE authorities. Let’s get started.
Understand the Type of Fine
Knowing the fine is the first step to understanding the reduction process. Each fine has its own issuing authority and reduction method. The most prevalent fines for residents and visitors in the UAE include:
- Traffic Fines issued by the Police or the Transport Authority of the respective Emirate for violations including but not limited to speeding, running a red light, parking violations, and lane violations.
- Visa Fines primarily imposed for overstaying a visit, tourist, or residence visa.
- Municipality Fines imposed by local government authorities for the violation of tenancy, business, or public conduct rules.
Traffic fines comprise the majority of fines, and while we will have the most information about them, the changes to the visa overstay rules in early 2026 warrant your attention if that is applicable to you.
Method 1: Pay Early and Take the Discount
This is the most, and least, time consuming technique. Payment is faster because most fines across the UAE allow for a discount for early payment.
Here are examples of some discounts for early payment across the Emirates:
- Dubai: If you pay a fine within 60 days you pay roughly 35% less. If you pay the fine after 60 days, but within a year, you pay 25% less. Any payment beyond a year is a full fine.
- Abu Dhabi: The Police of Abu Dhabi has a similar scheme, providing a 35% discount for fines paid within the first 60 days, and a 25% discount for fines paid after 60 days but within a year.
- Sharjah: Roughly the same schemes as above; 35% in 60 days, 25% after that but within a year.
Wait too long and the full AED 400 fine is due. If the fine is paid within 60 days, AED 400 would cost AED 260, a savings of AED 140.
Two important reminders. First, don’t waste time. The clock starts counting down when the violation occurs, or when the SMS notification is received. Second, the money discount only affects the money. It does not remove black points from your license, and does not apply to serious violations, such as reckless driving, DUI, or driving in an impound case.
Method 2: Wait for Amnesty or Discount Promotions
There are several discounts that range from the standard offering all the way to 50% discounts that are applied at different times to different Emirates. These are most commonly seen for national holidays like the UAE National Day (around December), Eid Discounts, and Discounts during Ramadan. Furthermore, Emirates such as Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, and Umm Al Quwain, have all had great seasonal promotions within the last couple of years.
You do not need to fill out any special forms for these promotions. When the promotion is available and your fine is applicable, you will see the discounted amount in the app or portal. The only thing you need to do is to pay during the time of the promotion.
Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that a promotion will be available again in any specific time period throughout the year. Because of this, we watch the official postings to find a great deal and faster promotions.
Method 3: Payment Plan Request for a Major Fine
Several options may be available for larger fines, which can range in the thousands of dirhams, including a payment in installments option. In certain situations, if the payments are made as scheduled, a reduction of approximately 25% may be applied.
While this is not a discount, it can ease the severity of the fine and allow the record to be updated from “unpaid” status to “clear.” The “unpaid fine status” may be more disruptive than the fine itself, as it can hinder the renewal of vehicle registration and create other complications.
Method 4: Formal Request for Fine Reduction
Some emirates allow for more than passive fine reduction opportunities. In certain instances, an active reduction request may be available, including in Abu Dhabi. There, a request for a fine reduction may be submitted via ADJD E-Services when signed in with the Emirates ID. There are restrictions on eligibility and it is common for the fine to be more than AED 2,000. The requests are generally reviewed, and a reduction is not guaranteed.
A request for reduction may be viewed more favorably for less severe violations, or if the request is submitted due to the lack of other options and it is known that there are, in fact, mitigating circumstances.
Method 5: Object to the Fine (And Get It Fully Rescinded)
The most appealing part of this method is that if a fine is issued that you believe is unjustified, you have the right to object to it without a fee, and if the fine is rescinded, it gets fully wiped from your record. It gets wiped as opposed to just a fee reduction.
There are a few things that you are able to provide evidence for that typically result in success.
- The radar, speed camera, etc. misidentified your vehicle.
- There was an equipment error.
- There was a lack of proper road signage or it was misleading.
- The fine was issued after you sold the vehicle.
- You were not in the vehicle at the time the fine was issued (e.g. rented the vehicle).
There is one rule that you want to definitely follow: object to the fine before you pay. In the UAE, in most instances, paying a fine means that you are accepting the fine, and it makes it almost impossible to dispute the fine after you have paid it.
Each emirate has their own method of how to file a fine.
- Dubai: The majority of traffic fines that are issued by the Dubai Police can be objected to in person at the General Directorate of Traffic in Al Barsha or any police station, and require your Emirates ID, your vehicle documents, the fine notice, and evidence to support your claim. If your objection is rejected but you believe you are still in the right, you can escalate the objection to the Dubai Public Prosecution.
- Abu Dhabi: Go to the TAMM platform and select the Abu Dhabi Police e-complaints service. Select “Objection to a Traffic Violation”. Enter your personal details. State why you believe the fine is incorrect, and attach any evidence or photos.
- Sharjah: Use the MOI UAE app to file a complaint. After logging in with your UAE Pass, select Help, then Complain. Alternatively, message the Sharjah Police Traffic Department via WhatsApp number +971 6 517 7555.
- Ajman: File a complaint via the Ajman Police app or website. After signing in with your UAE Pass, select the traffic complaint section.
- Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah: Use the MOI UAE app to file a complaint, after logging in with your UAE Pass.
Complaints are reviewed within 60 days. If the complaint is accepted, the fine is overturned. If the complaint is rejected and you still disagree, you can escalate the complaint to Traffic Prosecution and then Traffic Court. Decisions made by Traffic Court are final. Generally, you don’t have to go through more than one or two levels to get a complaint resolved.
Visa Overstay Fines: What Changed in 2026
Traffic fines and visa overstay fines are two very different systems and the system governing visa overstay fines was completely changed in 2026. Any advice you find online regarding overstay visa fines is outdated.
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) has implemented a fine system for overstaying visas in the UAE, effective February 11, 2026. All overstayed visas, regardless of the emirate, now incur a fine of AED 50 per day. Prior to this, tourist visas had a grace period; under the new system, fines begin accumulating the day after a visa expires. There are no reminders for overstays, and the system automatically tracks fines, which could become substantial before it is checked.
What can be done about overstays, and is there a way to have them cancelled?
Waivers. There are some circumstances where overstays can potentially be waived, such as a medical emergency or a flight cancellation caused by the closure of controlled airspace. Waivers are not guaranteed, and applications must be made through the ICP Smart Services or the GDRFA portal for visa overstays in Dubai. Supporting documentation is required.
Amnesty. The most recent major overstay fine amnesty occurred at the end of 2024. Currently, there is no ongoing amnesty and there is no indication when another amnesty will occur. The best option is to not wait for another amnesty.
Here are a few budget-friendly travel tips and general information for travelers whose visa has expired. If you have overstayed your visa by more than 30 days, you will need an out-pass (exit permit) for allowing you to leave the country. Certain immigration rules will not allow you to leave the country if there is a balance on your fine, so be sure to settle your fine before leaving for the airport. Fines can be paid via ICP Smart Services, the GDRFA Dubai portal, UAE Pass, approved Amer centers and immigration counters.
The best way to save money on visa overstays is to never overstay. If your visa is close to expiring, it is always cheaper to extend your visa than to overstayed it, and it doesn’t leave a mark on your record.
The Best “Discount” Of All: Your Record
It helps to state the obvious. Consistent compliance with the laws will keep your record clean and will even help when it comes to renewing your insurance because premiums will be lower. The best way to avoid paying fines is to never incur them.
Scams
Pay close attention because this is important. The “permanent secret discount” you heard is just a rumor, and no legitimate entity will charge a fee to give you 50% off your fines. If there are legitimate, active campaigns that offer discounts, then they will be announced by the police, transport authorities, or immigration authorities.
Scammers have gotten more sophisticated. SMS and social media messages touting deep discounts on fines won’t be found using official channels. As a best practice, never click on unofficial payment links and never surrender your Emirates ID or payment card data to third parties. Trust your intuition and use the official channels. This is a repeated message at Arabsky24 because these scams cost residents money every year.
Where to Check and Pay Your Fines (Official Channels)
Let’s start with the most common traffic and transport fines. To secure an official government discount on your fine, always use official government platforms.
- RTA Dubai website and/or the Dubai Drive app.
- Dubai Police (application and website)
- Emirates Vehicle Gate (EVG)
- MOI UAE application (fines across all emirates)
- Abu Dhabi Police e-services (TAMM)
- ADJD e-services (fine reduction application)
- ICP Smart Services (visa and overstaying fines)
- UAE Pass (the unified, official gateway to most of the aforementioned services)
Once you have gathered your information (plate number, Emirates ID, etc.) to access the systems, you will be charged in the system. If you are eligible for a discount, it will be displayed before payment is completed.
Your Quick Action Checklist
Here’s how to resolve a fine quickly:
- View your fine on the app/portal for your emirate.
- Think. Is it valid? If you don’t think it’s valid, submit an objection and provide your evidence before paying the fine.
- If it’s valid, quick! Pay it in the early time frame, to save the most money.
- If the fine is large, in Abu Dhabi you can request a fine reduction, otherwise you can ask about a payment plan.
- For an overstay fine, pay the fine or request a waiver to document it — you should not wait for an amnesty.
- Disregard all “pay us to remove your fine” requests. Use only official methods.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a fine removed?
Yes, fines that are issued in error can be removed, at no cost, if you submit a valid objection. Discounts that reduce fines are only issued for fines that are not removed.
Are black points removed with an early payment discount?
No, there is no removal of black points, only a reduction in the monetary fine.
Will there be UAE fine amnesties in 2026?
As of 2026, amnesties, that are not time-limited, will not be issued. However, traffic-fine campaigns that are time-limited will be issued in the emirates. During these campaigns, amnesties for immigration fines are issued.
Should I pay a fine I’m planning to dispute?
No. Contesting a fine after paying is basically impossible, so always dispute first.
What happens if I just ignore a fine?
There are a plethora of consequences for unpaid fines. For example, unpaid fines will impede you from renewing your vehicle registration as well as incur additional costs. For overstay fines, you will be unable to leave the country and it may even impact your future visa applications. It is always cheapest to resolve a fine early.
Final Thoughts
While there are multiple reasons fines may be considered stressful, the system in the UAE is actually much more accommodating to what is widely believed. This is only the case for those who are able to adeptly navigate the system. Always pay fines early in order to take the discount and watch for travel campaigns. If you receive a fine you believe is unjust, always take the opportunity to appeal or request a reduction payment plan. Always act fast and waive any visa overstay fines rather than wait for an amnesty.
The consistent theme of these practices is to stick to official UAE government practices and treat any “pay X to waive my fine” as a scam. Following these practices will always be the cheapest way to pay you fines.
